Friends of Seva, Saturday May 14 at the Craneway

Over 4,000 enjoyed live music at the Craneway Saturday May 14 to raise money for the SEVA Foundation and to celebrate Wavy Gravy's 75th Birthday. SEVA is dedicated to finding skillful means to relieve suffering caused by poverty around the world. More info www.seva.org.

Featuring Bob Weir, Chris Robinson, Mark Karan, Robin Sylvester, Molo, Neal Casal, Jeff Chementi and more friends...

Review from www.JamBands.com

Wavy Gravy celebrated his 75th birthday Saturday night with an all star concert at Richmond, CA’s the Craneway Pavilion. Like all of his recent birthday celebrations, the night benefited the SEVA foundation, an organization that works to build sustainable programs in underserved communities around the globe. Music stretched from 7 PM until nearly 3 AM and featured performances by Bob Weir & Friends, Mickey Hart, Zero, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hot Buttered Rum, Ace of Cups and The Clown Conspiracy, among others.

The evening’s collaborations started early, including an appearance by singer Nicki Bluhm during Hot Buttered Rum’s set on “Fruit of the Vine” and “Blackberry Pie.” Former Hot Buttered Rum drummer Matt Butler also played washboard on a cover of “Bertha.” Later in the night, Bob Weir emerged during Chris Robinson Brotherhood’s set for “They Love Each Other.” Weir also joined Robinson for the same song in Petaluma, CA last month.

Mickey Hart performed with a special band featured guitarist Steve Kimock, ALO drummer Dave Brogan and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, the latter of whom now lives in California. His percussion-heavy set came to a close with many of the evening’s entertainers onstage for a birthday parade based around “Baba Jingo.” The jam included Tipper Gore on percussion and both Weir and RatDog guitarist Mark Karan on guitar. Zero’s lineup was also something of a super group featuring Steve Kimock, Bobby Vega, Greg Anton, Pete Sears and Berry Sless.

For his show-closing performance, Weir put together a new band drawn from a familiar pool of Dead-associated acts. His core ensemble included Kimock, Karan, Phil Lesh & Friends drummer John Molo, Furthur/RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and RatDog bassist Robin Sylvester. The group ran through Dead classics and Dead-associated covers like “Playing in the Band,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Sugaree,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” “That’s It for the Other One” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” with the help of numerous guests. Chris Robinson emerged early in the set for “New Speedway Boogie” and “Sugaree” while Bluhm returned with pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless for both “Sugaree” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad.” During “The Other One,” Schools took over on bass and Henry Kaiser sat in on guitar. At the end of the set, Country Joe & the Fish co-founder Barry Melton and keyboardist Pete Sears also took the stage for the set-closing sing-along “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad.”

The show wrapped-up an extremely busy seven day stretch for Weir that included a performance with the Marin Symphony and a live broadcast from TRI studios. Wavy Gravy will host an East Coast birthday benefit at New York’s Beacon Theater on May 27

The Man Behind Richmond's Renaissance

Crime is down, business is up, and the city is avoiding major budget cuts thanks to Bill Lindsay, perhaps the Bay Area's best city manager.

Early each morning on Richmond's waterfront, just a few hundred feet from where thousands of men and women once feverishly assembled Navy ships, military jeeps, and half-track tanks during World War II, a new type of assembly line busily produces fresh, gourmet desserts.

Galaxy Desserts has been touted as one of the fastest growing businesses in the Bay Area. Its two hundred production workers steadily handcraft delectable crèmes, tarts, cheesecakes, mousse cakes, and the company's most celebrated item — the three-ounce French croissant, which has so much morning goodness in its fluffy folds that Oprah Winfrey has featured it five times on her favorite things list. The Oprah exposure brought such an onslaught of new orders (the company now makes upwards of 75,000 croissants a day) that Galaxy needed a larger kitchen. So the company moved from its San Rafael facility in 2005 to Richmond, where it found an ideal geographical location, competitive leasing rates, and enterprise zone tax incentives.

"I don't think any business looks forward to navigating city departments, but the City of Richmond has been more than functional; if I have a question, I know who to call to get it answered right away," said Galaxy CEO Paul Levitan. "We're entrepreneurs so we keep thinking about growing, and right now that would involve growing in Richmond."

"Duran, Wolken, and Mitchell have done an incredible job; they're about getting things done," said Eddie Orton, owner of Orton Development, which refurbished the historic Ford Assembly Plant into a prime waterfront office and restaurant space. The saw-toothed building also boasts the Craneway Pavilion, a 45,000-square-foot event space with sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay. "But the lynchpin is Lindsay. He's the lynchpin for Richmond's success, there's no question about it."

...some of the most exciting businesses to come to town are green. According to the city, there are 65 certified green businesses in Richmond. Among them is SunPower, which leases space in the remodeled Ford building. Even Chevron, the city's largest greenhouse gas emitter, has gotten into the green mix with its Engineering and Technology Division, which employes one hundred renewable-energy researchers, making it the fourth largest green employer in the city. Councilman Jeff Ritterman, a heart surgeon who was elected to the council in 2008, has been one of the city's most enthusiastic promoters of Richmond's new green-friendliness. "The real challenge for us is bringing more of these companies that can provide jobs in a meaningful way," he noted.

At 75, it's been a long, strange trip for Berkeley's Wavy Gravy

From Contra Costa Times
By Martin Snapp

Wavy Gravy, the raspy-voiced 1960s icon who famously announced to the crowd at Woodstock, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000," will turn 75 on May 15.

And what a long, strange trip it's been.

Wavy, whom satirist Paul Krassner compared to a cross between Harpo Marx and Mother Teresa, will celebrate with a public "Birthday Boogie" on May 14 at the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond. It will feature a Who's Who of the Bay Area music scene including Bob Weir and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish, Henry Kaiser, Ace of Cups, and Narada Michael Walden.

It's a fundraiser for Wavy's favorite charity, the Seva (a Sanskrit word for "service to humankind") Foundation, which Wavy cofounded in 1978 with spiritual leader Ram Dass and public health expert Larry Brilliant to fight preventable and curable blindness in Asia and Africa.

Wavy, who describes himself as "an activist clown and former frozen dessert" -- a reference to Ben & Jerry's naming a flavor after him -- was born Hugh Romney on May 15, 1936, in East Greenbush, N.Y. Soon afterward his family moved to Princeton, N.J., where one of his neighbors was a kindly old man named Albert Einstein, who took him on daily walks around the block.

"I was only 5, but I still remember that shock of white hair that predated Don King by half a century, the twinkle in his eye, his sneakers with no logo, and, especially, the way he smelled.

"I've never smelled anything like it since; but if I ever do, I'm going to walk up to the guy and say, 'Hey man, you smell like Albert Einstein!' "

Flash forward 20 years to Greenwich Village in the early 1960s, where he found a job as poetry director at the Gaslight Cafe.

He shared a room above the cafe with a fledgling songwriter from Minnesota named Bob Dylan, who wrote the first draft of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" on an old manual typewriter in that room.

One of the cafe's steady customers was Marlene Dietrich, who gave him a book of poems by Rainer Maria Rilke.

"I still have the book, but I still haven't read the poems," he confesses.

At about this time he embarked on a career as a monologuist, opening shows for John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Peter, Paul & Mary.

His manager was stand-up comic Lenny Bruce, who gave him a new stage name: Al Dente. Bruce also gave him a yarmulke sewn inside a cowboy hat that once belonged to silent movie star Tom Mix "so I could say, 'Howdy, Goyim!' "

Next, he formed a musical revue with Tiny Tim and Moondog at a dubious venue called the Fat Black Pussycat.

"We got front page in the Village Voice and a rave review in the New York Times," he recalls. "The next day the sheriff came and padlocked the joint for back taxes."

So he headed out to San Francisco, where he did a stint with The Committee, then moved to Los Angeles, where he taught improvisational techniques to Hollywood actors by day and neurologically handicapped kids by night.

In 1965, when he and his wife, Jahanara (then called Bonnie Jean), were living in a one-room cabin outside Los Angeles with about 40 friends, including fellow ice cream flavor and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, they all posed for a Life magazine cover photo.

"The landlord freaked out and evicted us, but the next day a neighbor came by and said, 'Old Saul up on the mountain had a stroke, and they need somebody to slop them hogs!' So we were given the mountain top rent-free if we would take care of about 60 hogs the size of Davenports."

And so the Hog Farm was born. Eventually, the Hog Farm moved north to Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, which boasts a lake -- Lake Veronica -- with a raft named George and a 350-foot water slide from Marine World.

In 1969 the Hog Farmers were hired by the promoters of the Woodstock Music Festival to build fire trails around the festival grounds.

"But we convinced them to let us set up a free kitchen, too. When we got to JFK airport a bunch of reporters were there to meet us, and they told us we had been chosen to provide the security, too. I said, 'My God! They made us the cops?' "

By the time the festival was over, Wavy -- or as he was still known, Hugh Romney -- had become the MC.

A few weeks later, he was performing similar tasks at the Texas Pop Festival, where the great bluesman B.B. King dubbed him "Wavy Gravy." And Wavy Gravy he has remained ever since -- except in the pages of the New York Times, which refers to him as "Mr. Gravy."

The Hog Farmers later took the free kitchen concept international working in Pakistan, Nepal and Tibet amid floods and war. With a $10,000 donation from rock promoter Bill Graham they founded the Seva Foundation, which is fighting blindness in the Third World and now works to prevent health problems in Native American communities.

These days, Wavy splits his time between the Hog Farm and his home in Berhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifkeley, a communal house that he calls the Hippie Hyannis Port. Every nook is filled with books, beads, Buddhas, incense, windup teeth, moose antlers, and Mickey Mouse and Goofy figurines. Dominating the scene is an enormous, larger-than-life portrait of Wavy.

"David Crosby bought it at a flea market. He held on to it for two years, then he mailed it to me. He said he couldn't stand me staring at him any more."

So what's next for Wavy Gravy?

"I don't know. As Tiny Tim always used to say to me, 'Time will tell.' "

TEDxGoldenGateED Bringing Focus on Compassion in Education to the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, CA

Prospect Sierra and U.C. Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center are teaming to host a TEDx conference on compassion in education (http://tedxgoldengateed.org) on Saturday, June 11 at the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, Calif. Tickets are available now via the website.

TEDxGoldenGateED programming is focused on compassion — the sympathetic awareness of another’s distress, coupled with the desire to alleviate their suffering. Compassion is at the heart of the world’s ethical and spiritual traditions. New scientific research suggests there are deep evolutionary roots to compassion, revealing humans to be a fundamentally kind and caring species with brain structures devoted to these emotions. Contrary to popular belief, compassion may be our natural inclination.

“Are we entering into an era of compassion? In today’s schools, the ability to imagine the needs of others, to think compassionately, and to design, innovate and act in ways that benefit others are true 21st century skills,” said Dacher Keltner, co-founder and faculty director of U.C. Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. “Encouraging greater compassion through the educational process is an idea worth spreading, in the true TED spirit.”

Featured presenters include: Yale University’s Marc Brackett; Vinicius Cantuaria, Brazilian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist; Christine Carter, author of “Raising Happiness”; Pixar’s Pete Docter; Ani Chöying Drolma, a singer, educator and Buddhist nun from Nepal; Bill Frisell, guitarist, composer and bandleader; and Mary Gordon, Roots of Empathy founder, among many others.

“In the past year, Prospect Sierra has studied the skills essential to 21st century success – skills our highly academic program must nurture in our students to prepare them for excellence in high school, college and beyond. This has led us to an integrated social-emotional health curriculum designed to enhance students’ relationships and overall well-being,” said Katherine Dinh, Prospect Sierra’s Head of School. “Our deep involvement in what promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking TEDx conference is an opportunity to share best practices and move forward the discussion on teaching compassion to our future leaders.”

Educators, education leaders, parents and others who support the important link between compassion and education are encouraged to attend TEDxGoldenGateED. The conference will also feature interactive workshops between speaker presentations. For details, please click here.

New presenters are added to the lineup routinely. Follow TEDxGoldenGateED on Twitter at twitter.com/TEDxGoldenGateED or on Facebook at facebook.com/TEDxGoldenGateED. Sponsors include local companies Bath Simple LLC and Morrison & Foerster LLP.

About Prospect Sierra

With exceptional teachers and staff who inspire a passion for learning, Prospect Sierra blends heart, mind and community to give its students a decided advantage in negotiating our rapidly changing global environment.

About the Greater Good Science Center

Based at the University of California, Berkeley, the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) studies the psychology, sociology and neuroscience of well-being and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient and compassionate society. The GGSC is unique in its commitment to both science and practice: not only does the center sponsor groundbreaking scientific research into social and emotional well-being, it also helps people apply this research to their personal and professional lives. Since 2001, the GGSC has been at the fore of a new scientific movement to explore the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior—the science of a meaningful life – and the center is without peer in its award-winning efforts to translate and disseminate this science to the public.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, Calif., with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Edinburgh, Scotland. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to organize local, independent TED-like events around the world; and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
