'Rosie the Welder' still serving her country
"Richmond, do something for your country!" the Bay Area radio announcer said. "Go to the Richmond shipyard and be a welder."
That's how Agnes Moore remembers her call to duty after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. The Rossmoor resident was 21 at the time.
The United States had just entered World War II and needed women on the home front to assume men's roles in the workplace building planes and ships. These women are collectively known today as "Rosie the Riveter."
"I decided right then I was going to do it. I knew it was a very important job and wanted to look my best," recalled Moore, now 90. "I put on my good black suit, white shirt with black, spiked, patent-leather pumps, my hat and gloves and walked straight into the hiring hall. I said, 'I want to be a welder.' "
The receptionist looked her up and down and suggested an office job might be more suitable. " 'No, I want to be a welder. That's what I want to do,' " she said.
Even though Moore had no clue what a welder's job entailed — including "working with fire" — she knew her country and its servicemen needed her help. The Arkansas native had moved to Monterey County a few years earlier to live with her brother, who had been recruited to play baseball in the Salinas Valley. Moore had a young daughter and was working in a vegetable packing plant when she answered her country's call.

Community Block Party: Sunday May 30
There aren't any big money sponsors behind the first Richmond Community Block Party planned for Sunday, which keeps the event true to its community name even as it poses some challenges.
The free party will have music and dance, arts, community booths, a rock-climbing wall and jump houses, kayaking, lawn sports and more from noon-6 p.m. at Ford Point and the Craneway Pavilion, on Harbour Way outside and along an adjacent section of Bay Trail on the shoreline.
The idea is to "invite everyone and show off the assets and beautiful things about Richmond," said Brian Drayton of Richmond Spokes, one of the community organizations putting together the celebration with the participation of the Craneway at Ford Point.
The party is intended to promote the Craneway and waterfront area as a desirable place for business and at the same time introduce the community to the area over the holiday weekend.

Smile At Fear : Finding A True Heart of Bravery
In one of her final teaching appearances in the San Francisco Bay Area, beloved teacher Ani Pema Chödrön will teach us how to work with our fear and anxiety using gentleness and inquisitiveness. We do this through the practice of meditation which leads us to befriend our fear and helps us find peace in our lives.
Ani Pema plans to spend more time in retreat in the coming years. This is a rare opportunity to spend a full weekend with her in person. This retreat includes additional meditation sessions led by Carolyn Rose Gimian, the editor of Smile at Fear, a book of teachings by the great Tibetan master Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche.
Pema Chödrön’s accessible style and deep understanding of meditation practice and her insight into how to apply the teachings to every day life makes this program suitable for those new to meditation as well as longtime practitioners. We expect this event to sell out. Please register early.
Ani Pema would like us to have lunch together on Saturday and Sunday. You may buy lunch as part of your program ticket for $10 per day. Or you may bring your lunch. We are offering either a delicious vegetarian/gluten-free option or a turkey option made by the Boilerhouse restaurant at Craneway Pavilion. If you do not purchase lunch now, you must bring your own food. We will not be able to accommodate onsite requests for food and there are no restaurants nearby.

Save the Last Dance
After establishing his eponymous dance company at Black Mountain College in 1954, Merce Cunningham became one of the earliest choreographers to introduce chance and non-narrative movement into modern dance. Frequently engaging in cross-disciplinary collaborations with visual artists (including Robert Rauschenberg and Bruce Nauman) and musicians (particularly his life partner John Cage), Cunningham maintained his inquisitive stance and creative prowess up until his death in July 2009, just months after premiering his last work “Nearly Ninety” on his 90th birthday. His artistic longevity is plain to see in British artist Tacita Dean’s new film Craneway Event, which follows Cunningham’s rehearsals of a site-specific performance in San Francisco Bay in 2008. “He really was extremely happy. He was singing and just so happy with the boats and the birds,” she says. Shot over three days at an old Albert Kahn-built Ford assembly plant, the documentary captures both performance and environment, tracing the movements of Cunningham’s dancers, as well as the dappled light streaming through the windows and the occasional tanker being dragged out into the bay. The film first showed at New York’s Performa festival in November 2009—sadly too late for Cunningham to see it, but Dean recalls him fondly: “He probably is one of the most courteous people I’ve ever met,” she says. “He had that old world charm. He was a gent and a wonderful man.” Craneway Event is showing at London’s Frith Street Gallery from May 13.
