Nicholas Boer, Special to The Chronicle, "I felt guilty. It was pouring rain on Easter, and rather than hosting our usual family brunch I was driving Mom to a 9-month-old restaurant in Richmond. Tucked in the harbor, the Boilerhouse seemed like a good idea when I had made the reservation. But that was before the Easter forecast called for howling winds, and before my first visit, which had been on a first date."

Artist Tacita Dean Remembers Merce Cunningham

"LONDON— In STILLNESS, a 2007 film by British artist Tacita Dean, Merce Cunningham sits in silence, unmoving for four minutes and 33 seconds. It's the late choreographer's tribute to his friend, the avant-garde musician John Cage, whose seminal 1948 composition 4'33'' consisted of him sitting tunelessly in front of a piano for that length. The critical success of Dean's film led to a second project with Cunningham in 2008, Craneway Event, which shows the choreographer's company dancing and rehearsing with him."

Spotted Owl Venue
Whilst scouring various locales for venues, for permanent studio and pop-up themes, we came across a most stunning, rather undiscovered spot, The Craneway.
It is breath-taking visually, and with over 50 Mill in renovation and close to 1mill on sound-system, this place is quite off the hook and surprisingly off the radar now too.
State of the art everything, including completely solar-generated, and satelite enabled. I suppose when you look at who is involved, you understand better the underlying vision.
We see endless possibilities for completely new platform of events. Doesn’t get much better than this.

Bridges Out of Homeslessness Conference Monday May 10
Seeking new solutions
Homelessness nationwide is at crisis levels and is breaching the traditional stop-gap solutions. In the Bay Area, high unemployment, high cost of living, and dwindling government resources: these factors result in more homeless persons than public housing and emergency shelter program can accommodate. At the county level, the "housing-first" approach to help the homeless is under extraordinary pressure.
New solutions must increase the capacity of homeless adults for gainful employment or micro enterprise in the private sector. This first annual conference includes an opening plenary session, workshops, and informal roundtable discussions in order to explore and develop new "employment-focused" solutions to homelessness in the Bay Area.
Who should attend
- Local and state homeless program administrators and executive staff
- Public health providers, outreach staff, case managers, and social workers
- Primary and emergency medical care, substance abuse, and mental health providers
- State legislators, their legislative staff, and local elected officials
- Family, drug, and criminal court judges
- Law enforcement leaders and police
- Non-profit organizations and advocates for the homeless
- Community health center and hospital executives, staff, and board members
- Public housing providers, landlords, and tenants
- People who have experienced homelessness and achieved their own solutions
- Convene stakeholders to examine new, cost-effective, employment-focused solutions to homelessness
- Identify gaps, incentives, and disincentives in existing programs for the homeless and practical ways to integrate new solutions
- Consider best practices of traditional and new solutions in the homeless continuum of care
- Focus on specific programs to optimize employability and career potential of homeless persons
- Use Richmond -- where growing numbers of the homeless face every possible challenge -- as the proving ground for new, employment-focused solutions to homelessness

This Friday's Music
We are excited to introduce High Country Blue Grass Band this Friday at 8:30pm!
"...One of the lonesomest, hard-drivingest traditional bluegrass bands alive...High Country manages to be fresh and exciting without even the merest nod to modern music." -BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED
Over the last forty years, High Country has earned its place as the West Coast's premier traditional bluegrass band. Strongly influenced by the classic styles of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers, the band's blend of banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, guitar and bass delivers the upbeat excitement of true bluegrass music. High Country's show offers a vital mix of powerful originals and standards, from blues to breakdowns to gospels sung in close harmony. Even the songs and tunes written by band members themselves remain true to the genre, with careful attention paid to the nuances of the bluegrass style. With driving rhythm, skillful picking and soulful singing, High Country brings the energy and experience of six seasoned professionals to this spirited American art form. After four decades of performing, the band remains fresh and exciting, and brings their love of bluegrass to an ever-widening audience.
